Self-ing online

In reading,The Cyberself by Laura Robinsion, she mentioned the Meadean view of Goffman in remarking on multiple selves for multiple performances. It made me think of Facebook and how people get caught out saying things they think are private but are actually public and the confusion of the two.The reason for this is that we do have multiple personas that we use for different situations. Most people behave differently with their grandmother to how they would in front of friends and the same for the workplace. It necessary for us to be able to function in the different roles we need to play, less we would fail them and possible lose the role altogether. So people end up getting their 'selves' confused on Facebook in that 1) It's a public forum that can behave like a private 2) Different performances are called for on the one platform i.e. it seems perfectly logical that people are unable to maintain selves because Facebook allows for one dominate self to show through. And if friends are communicating to you about private matters, next to inboxing about it, it quite hard to keep a public persona that is safe on Facebook. Besides, it whole purpose is suppose to bring people closer.
However, I found a reading which details the way in which to display two selves for an e-portfolio the symphonic and network by drawing on Social Theory by Foucault. So apparently, displaying multiple selves on one platform can be done it just requires strategy and knowledge in doing so online. That probably why most of us go wrong.
